Emmis Interactive in conjuction with Hot 97 FM are in the process of putting together a site which gives unsigned artist’s a tool to get their music heard by the masses. It’s some what similar to Garage Band but it’s primary focus is in urban music i.e. Rap, Hip Hop, R&B, Regeaton, Spoken Word etc. The site is relatively new and from all indication it is still in the BETA stages but there has been a positive response and there are hundreds of registered artists on the site. Take of advantage of this and get in while you can!!

Creative Commons License

From my limited understanding of the Creative Commons License it allows to reserve some of your rights to your music. What this means is that you can stipulate to an extent what can and can not be done with your music in the internet and physical worlds. In a nut shell you can have your music distributed all over the internet for listening pleasure but once it is to be used for commercial applications then you have to get paid handsomely! Here is an excerpt from the site:

Creative Commons helps you publish your work online while letting others know exactly what they can and can’t do with your work.

This is some pretty interesting stuff, and it looks like it may be helpful to independent artists, definately go to the site and read up on this. Maybe consult your legal advisor as well!

XM Radio: UNSIGNED!!

XM Radio has dedicated a channel for unsigned artists/musicians and they are paying ROYALTIES! There are no gimmicks or fine print all they ask is that you be a member of any of the performing rights societies such as ASCAP, SESAC, and BMI. This shouldn’t be a problem for you the artist because you should be a member of at least one of these societies anyway! For an oppurtunity to get your music played on XM Radio (not guaranteed) send your CD’s to the following address:
